Motivational Interviewing With "At Risk" Adolescents:

"Research indicates that across a broad range of schools of therapy, certain characteristics of therapists are associated with successful treatment. Therapist working in the same setting and offering the same treatment approaches show dramatic differences in their rates of client dropouts and successful outcomes. The apparent variations in effectiveness among therapists within specific treatment approaches sometimes exceeds those among different treatment modalities. A majority of client dropouts at a particular clinic may occur within the caseloads of a few staff members and therapist characteristics predicting high dropout rates may be subtle as vocal tone. In sum, the way in which a therapist interacts with clients appears to be nearly as import as – perhaps more important than – the specific approach or school of thought from which she or he operates."  Dr Miller

Motivational Interviewing has at its foundation Carl Rogers' client centered therapy. The therapist utilizes reflective listening techniques to elicit the client to participate in reflecting upon their life circumstances to address ambivalence regarding change. Motivational interviewing empowers the client to take responsibility for addressing ambivalence and inconsistencies in their need for change. The therapist takes a very nonconfrontational approach to working with the client. The therapist must adopt a mode which places the onus for change on the client.
