Major Depressive Disorder


 

DSM-IV Criteria for Major Depressive Disorder

296.2x Single Episode:


A. Presence of a single Major Depressive Episode:

 

B. The Major Depressive Episode is not better accounted for by Schizoaffective Disorder and is not superimposed on Schizophrenia, Schizophreniform Disorder, Delusional Disorder, or Psychotic Disorder Not Otherwise Specified.

 

C. There has never been a Manic Episode, a Mixed Episode, or a Hypomanic Episode.

 

Note: This exclusion does not apply if all of the manic-like, mixed-like, or hypomanic-like episodes are substance or treatment induced or are due to the direct physiological effects of a general medical condition.

 

If the full criteria are currently met for a Major Depressive Episode, specify its current clinical status and/or features:

Mild, Moderate, Severe Without Psychotic Features/With Psychotic Features

 

296.3x Recurrent:

 

A. Presence of two or more Major Depressive Episode:

 

B. The Major Depressive Episode is not better accounted for by Schizoaffective Disorder and is not superimposed on Schizophrenia, Schizophreniform Disorder, Delusional Disorder, or Psychotic Disorder Not Otherwise Specified.

 

C. There has never been a Manic Episode, a Mixed Episode, or a Hypomanic Episode.

Major Depression  treatment:

 

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most popular and commonly used therapy for depression treatment. CBT stresses the role of thinking in how we feel and what we do. It is based on the belief that thoughts, rather than people or events, cause our negative feelings. The therapist assists the patient in identifying, testing the reality of, and correcting dysfunctional beliefs underlying his or her thinking. The therapist then helps the client modify those thoughts and the behaviors that flow from them. CBT is a structured collaboration between therapist and client and often calls for homework assignments.

 

Cognitive Therapy - Cognitive therapy aims to help the patient recognize and reassess his patterns of negative thinking and replace them with positive thoughts that more

 

Behavioral Therapy -  Behavior therapy is a general field of health improvement that deals with learned, undesirable emotional and physical behavioral responses. These undesirable responses have been practiced so much that they have become personal habits. However, the people who have these undesirable habits believe that they have little or no satisfactory control over them. That is why these habits are often the main behavioral barriers to personally satisfying lives for their owners. Behavioral Therapist attempt to change unwanted behavior through the manipulation of the patients environment.

 

Interpersonal therapy- A form of psychotherapy in which the focus is on a patient's relationships with peers and family members and the way they see themselves. Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is based on exploring issues in relationships with other people. The goal is to help people to identify and modify interpersonal problems, to understand and to manage relationship problems.

 

Family Therapy -  There are many theories and applications of family therapy.  The core components of the therapeutic approach  focuses on the patient’s family unit in an attempt to influence the patients disorder.
